Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Full Face Respirator & SCBA Connection Kit (Cylinder Supplied Separately)
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
SCBA provides the highest level of respiratory protection available — positive-pressure breathing air from a cylinder on the user's back, completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Correct for Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) atmospheres, confined space entry where atmosphere cannot be continuously tested, emergency response, and any situation where the ambient air may itself be contaminated.
When SCBA is required over PAPR
- IDLH atmospheres — oxygen <19.5%, or contaminant concentrations above IDLH thresholds.
- Unknown contaminants — any situation where the hazard profile cannot be fully characterised.
- Oxygen-deficient atmospheres — confined spaces, inerting operations, nitrogen blankets.
- Emergency escape — short-duration escape cylinders for refuge or exit from contaminated zones.
- Fire services — although most fire-service SCBA is procured via specialised channels separate from this range.
SCBA components
- Cylinder — typically 6–9 L at 200 or 300 bar working pressure. Duration varies with user workload: 20–30 minutes for heavy work, up to 60 minutes for light.
- Pressure reducer and demand valve — delivers breathing air at slight positive pressure into the facepiece.
- Full-face mask — tight-fitting with integrated demand valve connection.
- Harness — back-mounted cylinder carrier, integrated with pressure gauge and whistle alarm.
Training and fit testing
SCBA use requires formal competency training under AS/NZS 1715 — users must understand cylinder monitoring, change-over procedures, and emergency escape signals. Full-face fit testing is required for every user before first use. This is not a product that can be issued without certified training.
Air quality
SCBA cylinders must be filled from breathing-air-grade compressors tested to AS/NZS 1715 requirements — typically quarterly air-quality testing for moisture, oil, CO, and CO₂. Using industrial-grade compressed air in SCBA cylinders can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and has resulted in fatalities.
Inspection and service
Monthly inspection by a trained operator; annual service and pressure test by a qualified technician; cylinder recertification every 3 or 5 years depending on construction. Never defer SCBA maintenance — every cylinder in use must carry a current test stamp.
Standards & compliance
SCBA in this range meets AS/NZS 1716 and AS/NZS 1715 for selection, use, and maintenance. Cylinders comply with AS 2030 for gas cylinder design. Emergency escape units are typically certified to AS/NZS 1716 as a sub-category of SCBA.
Frequently asked questions
Can SCBA be used continuously or only for entry/exit?
SCBA is cylinder-limited to 20–60 minutes per cylinder depending on workload. For sustained work in known contaminated atmospheres, compressed air line systems (supplied-air respirators) are more appropriate. SCBA is specifically for entry, emergency response, and short-duration work.
What duration cylinder should I specify?
Match duration to planned work time plus 1.5× safety margin for entry and exit. For confined-space entry where exit time may be 10 minutes, specify a cylinder with at least 30 minutes of working time at rest to cover the round trip plus reserve.
Are your SCBA compatible with fire service equipment?
Most industrial SCBA in this range uses different connection standards than fire-service equipment. For fire-service interoperability, specify at point of quote — we can source compatible fittings on request.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes — trade accounts and emergency response teams receive volume pricing. SCBA procurement usually involves site-wide programs; contact us to discuss training, cylinders, and service contracts. Apply for a trade account →
