Radio communication systems
In-helmet and in-hood radio communication systems compatible with CleanAir PAPR head-tops. The practical solution for welders, asbestos removalists, and PAPR users who need to communicate with colleagues but can't hear or be heard clearly through a sealed helmet or hood.
Why integrated comms
- Clear communication — microphone placed inside the helmet captures voice without ambient noise.
- Hands-free operation — PTT (push-to-talk) buttons on the belt unit or helmet.
- Protected from contamination — the headset is inside the sealed PAPR environment.
- Compatible with two-way radio systems — most units connect to standard UHF/VHF handhelds.
Typical applications
- Team welding — coordinating fit-up, tack welding, and inspection between operators.
- Asbestos removal teams — communication through full-body PPE across an exclusion zone.
- Confined space entry — between entrant, attendant, and supervisor.
- Supervisor-to-crew — giving instructions without removing PPE.
Radio compatibility
Radio adapter cables are handset-specific — Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, and others have different connector standards. Check the product listing for supported handset models and cable part numbers.
Noise cancellation
Higher-end systems include active noise reduction for noisy environments (grinding, abrasive blasting, heavy machinery). For quieter applications, passive noise attenuation from the helmet itself is usually sufficient.
Standards & compliance
Radio accessories don't interfere with the PAPR certification when installed per manufacturer specifications. Microphone and speaker units certified where relevant for intrinsic safety (ATEX / Ex zones).
Frequently asked questions
Will the radio work through a PAPR hood?
Yes — the radio microphone is installed inside the hood or helmet, not external. Voice quality is often better than with external mics because ambient noise is reduced.
Do I need a special radio to use this system?
Any standard UHF/VHF two-way radio with a compatible adapter cable. The radio itself does not need to be PAPR-specific — only the cable and in-hood headset are PAPR-compatible.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes — trade accounts and teams requiring multi-unit radio systems receive volume pricing. Apply for a trade account →
