Disposable respiratory protection

Disposable respirators are the single most common piece of respiratory PPE in Australian workplaces — correctly specified and fitted, a P2 mask gives a Required Protection Factor of 10 against silica, wood dust, welding fume, and biological aerosols at a fraction of the cost and complexity of reusable systems. Incorrectly specified or poorly fitted, they give almost no protection at all.

P1, P2, P3 — which do I need

• P1 — fine mechanical dust, pollen. Low-toxicity applications only. Sometimes called "dust masks." Not sufficient for most construction work.
• P2 — fine particulates including silica, wood dust, welding fume, bacteria, viruses. The construction and industrial minimum, and the correct choice for most site use.
• P3 — highly toxic particulates including asbestos (short exposure only), beryllium, hexavalent chromium, pharmaceutical powders. The strongest disposable classification.

P2 vs N95 — are they the same?

Roughly — P2 is the Australian standard, N95 is the US equivalent. They test against slightly different particulate sizes but filter to comparable 94–95% efficiency. For Australian compliance, specify P2 or AS/NZS 1716 certification; N95-only markings without AS/NZS certification are not compliant with Australian WHS requirements.

Valved vs unvalved

Valved disposables have a one-way exhalation valve to reduce moisture buildup and breathing resistance — more comfortable for long shifts and hot work. Unvalved masks are required for source control (reducing the wearer's exhaled particles, e.g., sterile work or during respiratory disease outbreaks) and for general medical/dental use.

Fit testing is mandatory

Any disposable respirator worn for occupational exposure must be fit-tested per AS/NZS 1715 before first use — quantitative (PortaCount) or qualitative (sodium saccharin or Bitrex) testing. A mask that passes fit test on one worker may fail on another. Annual re-testing is required.

Fit check — every wear

Even with a passed fit test, perform a positive and negative pressure check every time the mask is put on:

• Positive check — cover the valve (if present), exhale gently; the mask should bulge slightly without leakage.
• Negative check — cover the filter surface, inhale gently; the mask should collapse slightly without air entering.

Service life

A disposable respirator is single-shift use — replace at the end of each shift, or immediately if breathing resistance increases, the mask becomes damp, or the seal is compromised. Do not reuse across shifts.

Beards and respirator use

Standards & compliance

All disposable respirators in this range are certified to AS/NZS 1716 with clear P1/P2/P3 classification on the packaging. Imported products certified only to EN 149 (FFP1/FFP2/FFP3) or NIOSH N95 without AS/NZS 1716 certification are not compliant with Australian WHS regulations.

Frequently asked questions

Is a P2 mask enough for silica?

At exposure levels up to 10× the workplace exposure standard, yes. For dry powered cutting, grinding, or drilling of engineered stone or dense silica-bearing material, step up to P3 or use a PAPR — P2 at RPF 10 can be insufficient for the short intense exposures typical of those tasks.

How do I know if a mask is fake?

Check for the AS/NZS 1716 mark, manufacturer name, and licence number printed on the mask itself. Bulk packs without per-mask marking are almost always non-compliant. Stick to established brands with traceable supply chains.

Can disposable respirators be worn with safety glasses?

Yes — look for models with nosepiece designs that don't fog standard safety glasses. Anti-fog coated lenses and vented masks both help. For heavy work, consider integrated face shields or full-face respirators.
