Safety chain
Plastic safety chain is the low-cost, lightweight alternative to steel chain for perimeter marking, crowd control, and non-load-bearing barriers. Not for lifting or restraint — purely visual and psychological delineation — but far cheaper and quicker to deploy than traditional barrier systems.
Typical applications
- Stanchion connections — linking belt or post stanchions in car parks, loading docks, and lobbies.
- Worksite perimeter marking — hung between bollards for continuous visual exclusion.
- Event and crowd control — queue control, VIP area delineation.
- Internal site zones — separating staff-only from public areas.
Colour and visibility
Fluoro colours (orange, yellow, red) are standard for site use. Black/yellow and red/white alternating patterns are common in traffic and crowd-control applications. For indoor uniform installations, black or white is often preferred for aesthetic consistency.
Chain thickness
- 6 mm — lightweight, low-cost, internal use only. Suitable for stanchion connections.
- 8 mm — general-purpose site chain. Moderate wind resistance.
- 10 mm — heavier-duty. Less likely to blow around in strong winds; better visual presence.
Deployment
Hang at 1.0–1.1 m height for pedestrian exclusion. Attach with S-hooks, carabiners, or dedicated chain connectors — quick to deploy and reposition. For longer stretches, pair with rigid posts or bollards at 2–3 m spacing to prevent excessive sag.
What safety chain is not
Plastic safety chain is not load-bearing — it cannot restrain people or stop vehicles. Under moderate force it will break or deform. For any application where restraint matters (barriers, anti-theft, load control), use steel chain or rigid barriers.
Frequently asked questions
Does safety chain comply with Australian standards?
There's no specific AS/NZS standard for plastic safety chain — it's classified as a visual barrier rather than a protective barrier. Colour conventions follow AS 1319 where applicable.
How long does plastic safety chain last outdoors?
UV-stabilised chain: 1–3 years of outdoor use. Non-stabilised chain: 6–12 months before brittleness and fading. Stock UV-stabilised for permanent installations.
Can safety chain be used for vehicle exclusion?
No — it provides visual delineation only. For vehicle exclusion, use bollards, steel chain, or rigid barrier systems.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes — trade accounts get 5% off RRP, and bulk chain is priced per roll or carton. Apply for a trade account →
