Bunting & long-load flags
Bunting is the lightweight alternative to barricade tape for perimeter marking — overlapping pennants on a continuous string that flutter in wind for maximum visibility. Long-load flags are the red pennants tied to oversize vehicle loads to mark extended length, width, or height under Australian Vehicle Standards Regulations.
Bunting applications
- Large-area perimeter marking — where barricade tape would look sparse and lose visual impact.
- Event site perimeters — festivals, carparks, open-air works where colour and movement draw attention.
- Overhead hazard marking — strung at height to warn of overhead obstructions.
- Aerial and drone-visible markers — bunting is easier to spot from above than ground-level tape.
Bunting specification
Typical bunting uses 150–200 mm PVC pennants on a 4 mm polypropylene cord, with pennant colours in fluoro orange, yellow, or red/white alternating. Roll lengths are usually 25 m or 50 m.
Long-load flags
Under the Australian Vehicle Standards Rules, loads extending beyond a vehicle's normal envelope must carry red warning flags:
- Rear projection > 1.2 m — red flag on the trailing corner.
- Width > 2.5 m — flags at each front and rear corner.
- Height > 4.3 m — height-indicator flag.
Flags must be 300 mm × 300 mm minimum, bright red, and in good visible condition. After dark, flags are supplemented with warning lights per the specific rule.
Pilot vehicle requirements
Over-dimensional loads may require pilot or escort vehicles depending on the state — check the relevant road-authority permit. Our long-load flag range covers both the primary load flags and supplementary pilot-vehicle identification flags.
Standards & compliance
Long-load flag requirements are specified in the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation and equivalent state regulations. Failure to fit compliant flags attracts substantial fines and can trigger transport permit review.
Frequently asked questions
Is bunting a legal substitute for barricade tape?
Not for formal hazard delineation — bunting doesn't carry a printed danger/caution message. Use bunting to draw attention or mark perimeters; use barricade tape for specific hazard exclusion.
How long do long-load flags last?
Red flag fabric fades in UV and wind exposure — check regularly and replace when colour noticeably dulls. For daily-use transport, typical replacement cycle is 6–12 months.
Are there weight-based requirements for over-dimensional loads beyond flags?
Yes — mass, width, and height all have permit thresholds that require flags plus lights, pilot vehicles, permitted routes, or escorts. Consult the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator or your state equivalent for permit requirements.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes — trade accounts get 5% off RRP. Bunting is typically ordered in carton quantities; long-load flags are ordered per fleet size. Apply for a trade account →
