Reusable earplugs
Pre-moulded silicone or thermoplastic plugs designed to be washed and reused for days or weeks. Right for workers who consistently use hearing protection and prefer a cleaner, longer-life alternative to disposable foam, and for environments where foam-plug disposal volume is undesirable. Most reusable plugs are flanged — the multiple silicone flanges create an air-tight seal against the canal wall.
Flanged plug designs
- Two-flange — lightweight, comfortable, slightly lower attenuation. Good for office-adjacent noisy zones and moderate-noise workplaces.
- Three-flange / triple-flange — the common industrial format. Class 3–4 SLC80 in a reusable, washable plug. Most workers find them comfortable for full shifts.
- Push-in / moulded body — soft-tip plugs with a rigid stem for insertion without rolling or contacting the foam itself. Cleaner than foam for food-industry use.
When to choose reusable plugs
- Consistent daily users — workers with predictable noise exposure benefit from a plug that's consistent and known-fitted.
- Food and pharma — reduces plug-handling contamination versus foam. Metal-detectable reusable variants available.
- Environmental considerations — reduces plastic waste from disposable plugs.
- Comfort preference — workers who find foam plugs uncomfortable or find the roll-and-hold insertion awkward.
Hygiene and maintenance
Wash daily with mild soap and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry before reuse. Store in the supplied carry case (keeps plugs clean between uses). Inspect for cracks, hardening, or discolouration — retire plugs if the flanges are damaged or no longer flexible. Typical service life is 2–6 weeks of regular use, extending to 3 months with careful handling.
Corded vs uncorded
- Corded reusable plugs — stay connected by a neck cord so they hang around the neck when not in use. Easy to re-insert at intermittent noise exposure.
- Uncorded — stored in a small carry case on a belt clip or lanyard. Cleaner; avoids cord-tangling on safety equipment.
- Don't use corded plugs around rotating equipment (presses, lathes) where entanglement is a risk.
Custom-moulded plugs
For workers who wear hearing protection all day, every day, custom-moulded silicone plugs (taken from ear impressions and manufactured to the individual ear canal) offer the highest comfort and most reliable fit. Higher up-front cost (typically $150–$300 per pair) but service life of 3–5 years and zero insertion technique dependency. Available through our trade team for workforce-wide rollout.
Standards & compliance
Reusable plugs in this range are certified to AS/NZS 1270 with SLC80 markings typically Class 3 or 4. Metal-detectable variants meet HACCP requirements.
Frequently asked questions
How long do reusable plugs last?
With daily use and proper cleaning, 2–6 weeks. With careful handling and cleaning, up to 3 months. Retire if flanges crack, harden, or tear.
Can I wash reusable plugs in hot water?
Warm water and mild soap is best. Very hot water can distort silicone flanges over time. Avoid bleach, alcohol, or solvents — they degrade the silicone.
Are reusable plugs more hygienic than foam?
When properly washed between uses, yes. When reused without washing, they're potentially worse because the same plug collects contamination across days. Hygiene discipline is more important than plug type.
