Banded earplugs
Earplugs mounted on a lightweight headband — pulled up out of the ear canal when not needed, pushed in when entering noise zones. Right for workers moving between quiet and noisy areas, supervisors and inspectors touring multiple zones, and anyone who wants the convenience of earmuffs with the attenuation of plugs. Not typically for constant-noise workers (who are better served by disposable or reusable plugs).
When to choose banded plugs
- Intermittent noise exposure — workers entering a noisy zone for short periods, like production-line inspectors or maintenance crews moving between machines.
- Supervisors and visitors — band-style plugs don't get lost and are visibly on the person, making compliance checks easy.
- Warehouse and logistics — forklift operators, stock pickers, and dispatchers where ambient noise is variable.
- Quick don/doff environments — fire services, emergency response, and environments with brief but intense noise exposure.
Band styles
- Over-the-head — default style; stable under a cap or hat.
- Behind-the-neck — for use with hard hats or wide-brim sun hats.
- Under-the-chin — niche configuration for specific headwear combinations.
Plug tip options
- Foam tips — softer, higher attenuation, single-use replacement tips.
- Silicone tips — washable, reusable; slightly lower attenuation.
- Flanged tips — the tree-style flanged rubber tip found on reusable plugs, mounted on a headband.
Fit and use
Unlike roll-down foam plugs, banded plugs rely on the band tension to press the tip into the ear canal rather than expansion inside the canal. This typically means slightly lower attenuation (SLC80 Class 2–3) than rolled foam (Class 5), but much faster and easier insertion. Works well for moderate-noise environments (up to ~95 dB); higher-noise environments need rolled foam or earmuffs.
Maintenance
Silicone tips wash with mild soap and water. Foam tip replacements are available as refill packs. Replace the band when tension is lost or the tip holders crack. Full band-plug replacement every 6–12 months for daily users.
Standards & compliance
Banded plugs in this range are certified to AS/NZS 1270 typically at Class 2 or 3 SLC80. Verify class against your site's noise survey before issuing.
Frequently asked questions
Are banded plugs as effective as regular foam plugs?
Attenuation is typically slightly lower (Class 2–3 vs Class 4–5 for foam), because the band presses the tip into the canal rather than the tip expanding from the inside. They're a great fit for moderate-noise or intermittent-exposure environments but not the first choice for very high noise.
Can banded plugs be worn with a hard hat?
Yes with a behind-neck-band variant. Over-head bands interfere with hard-hat wearing. Helmet-mounted earmuffs are the common alternative where hard hats are mandatory.
How often should I replace band tips?
Foam tips: single-use or short-reuse. Silicone tips: wash daily, replace every 2–4 weeks for heavy use. Replace the whole band when the tension is lost or the tip holders crack.
