Lanyards & ropelines

Rope-based fall-protection systems — vertical lifelines, rope grabs, adjustable ropelines, and restraint lanyards — for applications where flexible-line movement is needed. Unlike fixed-length shock-absorbing lanyards, these systems allow the user to move up, down, or along a line while maintaining fall protection. Essential for ladder climbing, roof work, rope access, and controlled descent.

Vertical lifeline + rope grab

The core system for vertical climbing and descent. A synthetic-rope lifeline is anchored at the top; the user wears a rope grab that slides freely on the rope but locks instantly if loaded by a fall. Typical applications: ladder climbing over 6 m, roof-edge work where the lifeline is anchored at the ridge, and controlled descent for maintenance work on towers and masts.

• Static kernmantle rope — 11–12 mm construction, low-stretch so the rope grab locks immediately under load.
• Rope grab — cam-operated device that slides with hand pressure and locks under sudden load. Some have a shock pack built in; others require a separate energy absorber between grab and harness.
• Anchor end termination — either a sewn eye for attachment to a karabiner-anchor plate, or a direct-attached hook.

Adjustable work-positioning ropelines

Adjustable ropes that allow the user to fix a working length between harness and anchor, then adjust as the work progresses. Common in scaffold-inspection, formwork, and roofing where the user needs to lean back into the line to free both hands. These are restraint devices — they prevent the user from reaching the edge — and are not fall-arrest unless combined with a shock-absorbing component.

Rope access systems

IRATA and SPRAT rope-access work uses dual ropes (working line + backup line) with ascenders and descenders. The working line carries the user's weight; the backup line has a fall-arrest rope grab. Only for users trained to the relevant rope-access certification — not a general-trade product.

Restraint vs fall-arrest

Important distinction under AS/NZS 1891:

• Restraint — a fixed-length or adjustable line that prevents the user from reaching the fall edge. No fall occurs, so no shock absorber is required. Used on low-slope roofs where the user works away from the edge.
• Fall arrest — the user can reach a position from which they could fall. Requires shock-absorbing component and appropriate clearance below.

A ropeline system used as fall-arrest must incorporate an energy absorber — either built into the rope grab or as a separate shock-pack lanyard between grab and harness.

Inspection and maintenance

Ropes are checked along their full length before each use — feel for internal damage (crunching, hard spots), and look for cuts, abrasion, glazing (heat damage), or chemical contamination. Ropes exposed to acids, solvents, or prolonged UV lose strength rapidly. Retire ropes at 5 years regardless of condition, or immediately after any fall-arrest event. Store out of UV exposure in a rope bag.

Standards & compliance

Ropelines and rope grabs are certified to AS/NZS 1891.3. Static kernmantle ropes for rope access meet EN 1891 (Type A or Type B). All components require six-monthly documented inspection under AS/NZS 1891.4.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any rope as a lifeline?

No — only static kernmantle rope rated for fall-protection use. Polyester rigging rope, polypropylene rope, and mountaineering dynamic rope are not suitable — dynamic rope stretches too much (delaying rope-grab engagement); low-quality static ropes don't meet EN 1891.

Does a rope grab need a shock absorber?

Depends on the grab. Some have a built-in energy absorber and connect directly to the harness. Others require a separate shock-absorbing lanyard (typically 0.6 m, shock-pack rated) between the grab and harness D-ring. Check the grab's manual — mismatching can result in dangerous peak loads.

Can I leave a lifeline installed permanently?

Permanent installations require UV-protected housing, purpose-engineered anchor points, and documented annual inspection. Most temporary lifelines are rigged for the job and packed away afterwards — this extends rope life significantly compared to permanent outdoor installation.
