Choosing the right head protection

Hard hats are mandatory PPE on virtually every Australian construction site, mine, and industrial facility. Beyond the basic shell, the real spec decisions are: vented or unvented, wide brim or standard peak, electrical rating (Type 1 vs Type 2), and which accessories — chin straps, sun brims, earmuff combos — complete the system. Hard hats (vented, unvented, long peak)

Understanding AS/NZS 1801 classifications

AS/NZS 1801 is the Australian industrial hard hat standard. Two key classifications:

• Type 1 — impact and penetration protection from falling objects. The default construction spec.
• Type 2 — Type 1 plus side-impact protection. Required for some mining and demolition applications.

All AS/NZS 1801 helmets must be retired 3 years from date of manufacture (check the moulded date-code inside the shell) or immediately after any impact, regardless of visible damage.

Electrical classification

• Class E (Electrical) — tested to 20,000V. Required for linesman and energised electrical work.
• Class G (General) — tested to 2,200V. Standard construction helmet rating.
• Class C (Conductive) — no electrical protection. Usually metal or vented shells; not permitted near live conductors.

Vented vs unvented

Vented hard hats have slots or holes in the shell to improve airflow and reduce heat stress — essential for hot Australian sites in summer. Downsides: no electrical protection (Class C), and debris can enter through vents.

Unvented hard hats are solid-shell, maintain full Class G or E electrical rating, and offer slightly better impact performance. Uncomfortable in hot weather without a cooling liner or sweatband.

Frequently asked questions

How often should hard hats be replaced?

Every 3 years from date of manufacture (moulded date-code inside the shell) or immediately after any impact, chemical exposure, or visible damage. The UV exposure on outdoor Australian sites degrades the polymer well before the 3-year mark, so earlier replacement is often warranted.

Can hard hats be painted or stickered?

Manufacturers generally advise against painting because solvents in paint can degrade the shell polymer. Stickers are usually acceptable if limited and applied with a water-based adhesive — check the specific manufacturer's guidance. Most workplaces allow branded company stickers issued by the employer.

Do I need a chin strap?

Required for any work at heights above 2m under Australian work-at-height regulations, and for climbing, scaffolding, or demolition. Not required for general ground-level site work but recommended in windy conditions.

Are all your hard hats AS/NZS 1801 certified?

All Australian-made hard hats in our range are AS/NZS 1801 certified — the classification (Type 1 or Type 2) is listed on each product page. The E-Man range is EN 397 / EN 12492 certified for specialist climbing applications, not AS/NZS 1801. Bump caps and sun hats are not AS/NZS 1801 certified and clearly labelled as such.
