Choosing the right work footwear

Foot injuries are second only to hand injuries in frequency on Australian worksites, and unlike most PPE, work boots are worn for 8–10 hours a day. Comfort and fit matter as much as the safety rating — a boot that causes fatigue ends up left in the ute. Understanding safety-footwear classifications

The AS/NZS 2210.5 classification system tells you what a safety boot is rated for at a glance:

• SB — basic safety (toe-cap protection only).
• S1 — SB plus antistatic, heel absorption, closed heel region, and fuel-oil-resistant outsole.
• S2 — S1 plus water penetration and absorption resistance (upper).
• S3 — S2 plus penetration-resistant midsole and cleated outsole. The most common spec for construction and mining.
• S4 / S5 — moulded rubber or polymer boots (gumboots) at S1 or S3 equivalent specs.

Slip-resistance ratings

All safety footwear carries a slip-resistance class based on ceramic tile (SRA), steel plate with glycerol (SRB), or both (SRC). For kitchen, food-processing, and mining work, specify SRC — it's the only rating that reflects mixed wet/oily surfaces.

Steel toe vs composite toe

Steel toe is lighter, thinner, and offers the same impact rating at a lower cost. Downsides: conducts heat and cold, sets off metal detectors, and may cause issues in electrical environments.

Composite toe (fibreglass, Kevlar, or plastic) is lighter than steel, thermally neutral, and metal-detector safe. Slightly bulkier at the toe box and more expensive. The default choice for aviation, rail, and electrical work.

Frequently asked questions

How often should safety boots be replaced?

Typical service life is 12–18 months of daily use. Retire earlier on any of: outsole wear-through, midsole puncture damage, toe-cap impact, separation between sole and upper, or loss of waterproof integrity. A visibly worn boot is a liability.

Do I need composite-toe boots around electrical work?

If there's any chance of stepping on live conductors or working in energised environments, yes — use composite-toe boots rated for electrical insulation. For general electrical fit-out, steel-toe is acceptable; always check your specific site's requirements.

Are your boots AS/NZS 2210 certified?

Every safety-rated product on this site is certified to AS/NZS 2210.3 at minimum, with the classification (S1/S2/S3/SRC etc.) listed on the product page. Non-safety lines are labelled clearly and should not be specified for hazard environments.
