Choosing the right safety goggles

Goggles are the right call whenever the hazard includes loose particles, liquid spray, or chemical splash — anything that can get around the side of standard safety glasses. The seal around the eye socket is what sets goggles apart, but the type of venting determines whether they'll fog in the first ten minutes.

Sealed vs. indirect-vent vs. direct-vent

• Sealed (non-vented) — full liquid and chemical splash protection. Best for chemical handling and high-pressure cleaning. Fogs more easily without anti-fog coatings.
• Indirect vent — splash protection with reduced fogging. The vents are baffled so liquid can't enter directly. The standard choice for most trades.
• Direct vent — maximum airflow, lowest fog risk. Protects against impact and dust only; not suitable for splash.

When to choose goggles over safety glasses

Use goggles whenever any of these apply: overhead cutting, demolition, sanding, chemical handling, high-pressure cleaning, mining faces, or any work where particles can ricochet. If workers are raising their safety glasses because dust or spray is getting around the edge, that's a sign the task has outgrown safety glasses and needs goggles.

Fit over prescription eyewear

OTG goggles (over-the-glasses) fit most prescription frames without compromising the seal. Check the frame width if workers wear wider prescription frames — some OTG models handle up to 150mm.

Anti-fog performance

Goggles with factory anti-fog coatings outperform spray treatments and last longer under sustained wear. In high-humidity or hot environments, specify an AF coating and indirect venting together — one without the other fogs within minutes.

Do goggles replace safety glasses entirely?

Often, yes — for the tasks they're rated for. Many crews issue both: goggles for high-risk tasks (demolition, chemical work) and safety glasses for everything else. Workers keep both on-person in a case.

Can goggles be worn with a respirator?

Most half-mask respirators fit cleanly under goggles. For full-face respirators the eye protection is built in and separate goggles aren't needed. See our respiratory protection range.
